Four faces of a clock, manufactured by the Howard Clock Products Inc. of Waltham, Massachusetts, have pointed the time of day to the citizens of Vicksburg, Mississippi for generations.
Each face of this clock points to each street in the Square, Cherry Street, Jackson Street, Monroe Street and Grove Street – and ticks out the minutes of the town’s heart beat as its hands move across the hours.
The Clock was purchased in 1856 and installed in 1859 by Max Kuner. The Tower clock was once damaged by the tornado of 1953, and was later repaired by Grady Leese, an electrical engineer from Vicksburg. To this day the clock’s motor still operates, but will no longer pulse the correct time.
