“The people of Vicksburg, Mississippi, voted against secession. From the ballot box to Jackson’s capitol building, they voiced opposition to the Civil War. But when the Union arrived, they ungrudgingly became Confederates, giving support in both materials and manpower. Over 2,500 men marched away to fight, while hundred would never return.
What ensued was a forty-seven day siege accompanied by years of enemy occupation that would prove to be far more abhorrent than anything witnessed on the battlefield. Yet despite numerous casualties and months of intense battle, nothing could dampen the citizen’s spirits.”
